Should Malaysia build a nuclear power plant?

8 october 2010 (friday) NUCLEAR TALK.

It was very effective and informative talk  on nuclear power plant planning for our coutry today..,
Let us summarize of what we've been through the talk.,..,=)

 1. Malaysia aims to have nuclear power plant by 2021

From some info, the  plan is for 2021, which now is about ten years, or eleven years gap between the actual  implementation where the reactor is functioning.Malaysia is now at the preparatory stage of building the      plant, adding that the country would have to first sign the relevant international treaties that it did not sign in      the past.

2.TNB ready to undertake Malaysia's first Nuclear Power Plant.
TNB, together with the Malaysian Nuclear Agency and Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, had prepared preliminary papers for the government to consider. very impressive !

Hello,

I think that 2021 would be a realistic tentative date to start Nuclear Power generation. It gives us plenty of time to prepare, sign the treaties, and to clarify other logistics. However, I also went for the talk, but I want to know, what kind of reactors are Malaysia planning to use/build>? FBR or LWR? COrrect me if I made any mistake..Thanks

2021 might seem a far along distance from today, but its a good start for our country if we wish to see this happen. however i hope the malaysian government can watch this project carefully due its nuclear waste and safety issues concerning human safety.

by 2021,i think Malaysia will be a solely independant countries,in which does'nt depends on other countries for fuel, such as petrol, and diesel, because we can generated our own power plant, which gives a great benefits to us,as a citizen of Malaysia.

Hey there. 2021 might be the most realistic year for us to have a nuclear reactor. This is due to the fact that Malaysia is not a rich country in the sense of resources and money. There are alot of R&D need to be done before we fully implement nuclear energy in Malaysia. And in my opinion, TNB is the best choice to take the responsibility of our first Nuclear Power Plant as they have many capable engineers in that field.

There is a question that i really want to know the answer which is, Where will Malaysia build the nuclear reactor? And where we will bury the waste?

Thank You.

SUPER BAD IDEA!

Malaysia is a place famous for its collapsed stadium, cracking bridges and highways, leaking Biggest Court House in the World, Leaking Parliament and even our Pavillion in Shanghai Expo is leaking.

As a Malaysian, I have zero confidence in Malaysian's handling such a delicate and dangerous material.

Thank you

nadia said...

Adrian, u should not think it all as a bad idea.. why dont u take all the good things happen here in malaysia..

how many collapsed stadium compares to the one that still uphold?
how many cracking bridges and highways compares to the one that in a good shape?

now i am one of the youth in malaysia who will stand up and brings a better tomorrow for malaysia. and will also do my best to improve the quality of living in my country. and i bet all the students here are too.

so, why dont u try to change ur perspective and work hard to make malaysia a famous place for his tremendous stadium, great highways, and better energy in the future. :)

Wow!! interesting debate goin on on this topic!Good that u guys are interested in wats going happen to our country if a nuclear power plant is build here! Well, it needs billions and years to build a nuclear power plant so sincerely I dont think that TNB or whoever who is going to build this will not study all the possibilities such as the capital costs, operating cost, security ( radiological accident) and methods of waste disposal of the radioactive waste.
Honesty,we are talking about NUCLEAR here!

timb said...

If we really need to harvest energy and are going to really build a power nuclear plant in 2021,then do consider all possibilities, make sure its far away from populated area and safety should be the first and upmost priority!!

It definitely needs a lot of money of money to build a NPP. And there will be a lot of hard work. We won't be solely independent but still it reduces the import of fuels and coals over the years starting from 2021, hopefully. Anyway, all the best to our nuclear crew!!

yaa..The talk was superb. It change totally the peoples perception on nuclear. If before this Chernobyl was the one in everyones mind, the talk now had divert it into making the nuclear as a main energy supply in our country. And in my opinion, Malaysia should built it too.And TNB'S effort to makes it true is really honourable.:)

Thanks guys for the comments.. all of you seems interested in nuclear.. i suggested you all to take nuclear subject as one of the your elective subject.

Jason - i do the assignment regarding to your question. you can refer to the article ' Best Two Reactors For Malaysia'. in the article, i compare the features and primary risk factors of the reactors.

Lim Chee Keong - very tough questions!!
there are many factors need to consider to build a nuclear power reactor.
1.capital cost
-cost billions
-long construction period
-servicing the capital cost
-fuel price

2. operating cost
-security- in case radiological accident
-possible theft of nuclear materials

3. waste disposal
-radioactive waste
-cost of storing, transporting and disposing waste

4.suitable place
- far from populated area
-easy transportation
-easy to dispose waste

where in Malaysia~?
-maybe in east Malaysia...

Taking the 1st step is the hardest part always, we are not less than the countries who has nuclear now, they all started some point.
by preparing the papers for the government to consider i think TNB is moving in the right direction 11years from now is not much for such power like Nuclear ... Best Of Luck

Its a nuclear power plant we are talking about, and its Malaysia we a relating it with. As Malaysian we ourselves very well know how things work in Malaysia. If 2021 is the year we Malaysian might have our very own NPP,Things should change now.Especially the current mentality of Malaysian.Trainings which are provided should be done very seriously, and thorough research on cost of building, location of bulding have to be found as it must not be hazardous to he enviroment.

Nuclear power plant is the greenest way to produce power in the most efficient generation. How many nuclear reactors will the government build? Will the government also considering the portable 100 times smaller micro-sized nuclear reactor, like the one built by Hyperion Power Generation of US, currently hot in the news?
As reported, UAE is in joint venture with the US to build their USD 40 billion nuclear reactor. Saudi Arabia meanwhile is in cooperation with Japan's Toshiba and US' Exelon and Shaw Group to build at least two nuclear power plants in the country. How the government deal with the large funding needed to build a nuclear power plant?
The expertise to manage and maintain the power plant is something intriguing here.Is the country has enough expertise or will the government consult foreign expertise?

It is pretty cool to build a NPP in Malaysia, considering it's benefits. The drawbacks are quite harmful to Malaysia's economy as well. I really do hope that TNB can equip itself in the events that the NPP project really works out and I really hope that it does work out as it will benefit the citizens as well.

The year 2021 is the year all the citizens of Malaysia would be looking forward too. It indeed gives Malaysia sufficient amount of time to take all the necessary precautions and steps as well as researches to allow a safe harvesting of this energy.

About the site or base for this power plant, as i stated before i personally think it would on the region of sabah and sarawak.

Nuclear power plant is good for the new resources . But we should consider the suitable location too . To me, a very spacious ground is needed to generate the nuclear energy and far away from the human community . We have our rainforest , the spacious one . but is it worth it to sacrify the mother nature for this nuclear ?

nice summary..>.<
short n simple...

i also agree 2021 is the right time we start using nuclear energy. We should move forward and using latest technology to ensure our country growth faster.

to normie,i think it is very worthy sacrifice our mother nature for nuclear because the effect of using nuclear energy very big and good to environment.we can reduce green house effect and get clean air when we using nuclear energy.we must remember, all great things in the world-when it can be done-need great sacrifices in order to achieve it.
so,we as malaysian people should agree and support our government and TNB(as UNITEN student,we should proud @_@) to make a big step in nuclear energy.

normie,please re-think again...

Bravo to u guys!!Wow!! Our leaders shud read this blog cos we do have young Malaysians who are concern about the future of our country esp concerning building a Nuclear Power Plant. We do realise that its not a simple project but a massive one as it involves many aspects esp the setbacks.Yeah, maybe building a NPP might solve our energy problem in the future and thats what developed countries do but u young intellectuals must explore ways and means to find other safer alternatives. We must try to protect our environment by all means as everything has its Domino Effects,if we use coal and natural gas it will diminish eventually and contribute to global warming and a radiological accident might happen if we build a NPP!!Ha.ha.so watever we are building in the future to harvest energy, which might probably be NPP in 2021,the expertise should be you all,UNITEN's aspiring engineers!!

I agree that a lot of factors need to be taken into consideration in building nuclear plants, but this shouldn't stop our country from reaching its goals. Furthermore the time frame that has been set until the year 2021 could be a good decision where many issues can be sorted out for the best outcome. I feel Malaysia should strive to its aim starting today because of its great benefits. A nuclear power plant can be a solution for lots of problems faced by Malaysians nowadays.

Hi,
Nuclear power plant is like aeroplanes. It's the safest form of travel. When an accident does occur, however, the magnitude of human casualty is often mind-blowing and unforgettable.

When you think that the majority of nuclear power plant accidents around the world were due to human errors, I would err on the side of caution and vouch for other, safer, forms of generating power.

In my opinion, it's a good idea to have NPP because as time goes by, we need a lot more land space, and NPP is said to save alot of land space. The conventional power plant could be scrap and replace with better NPP

Today we are seeing the impacts of climate change around the globe - melting glaciers, rising sea levels, stronger storms, higher floods, less snow north and more drought south. To overcomes all of these, we should take advantages on nuclear energy and built NPP to generate electricity.

let say we have done with everything for nuclear power plant....
in case, the source to conduct the process such as uranium already run out in our country. and we have to buy the source from foreign country, izt it will end up as profit?? or we have to terminate the nuclear power plant.????

Ha!Ha!Good questions Sivabalan but you got it the other way around. If we run out of source to process Nuclear Power which is Uranium,we will NOT end up with profit but loss as we have to buy the source. Anyway as far as I know we do not have Uranium is Malaysia.Ur second question is very interesting too.Terminate NPP which cost billions and years to build? Honestly I don't think so as if TNB is going build NPP they must have thought of all these consequences ! Am I right?

In my opinion MAlaysia must now start to use Nuclear power plant. this is because day by day the use of energy is increasing. Based of the reason statics, we are losing tons of energy. we need find the alternative energy which is the Nuclear energy.
But first we need several things to be think off and solution must be obtained.
1. what is the cost?
2. what the benefit?
3. what is the disadvantage? Hw do we overcome it?
4. do we have the right materials to build it in Malaysia?
5.Do we have enough knowledge in building it?
6. Do we have enough professional to move to the project?
7. Do we have enough working force?
This are certain question that must be considered in order to find the alternative.
Malaysia can start using nuclear power plant.

Yes, nuclear is a HUGE leap forward, but we have to take this step delicately cause even a minor mistake could cost us..firstly,nuclear reactors are very very expensive,2nd the disposal of the waste..there are only 3kinds of ways..2 of which is burying it underground and third is recycling(malaysia does not have alot of land by the way)..start training our own people to know how to sustain the reactor..there is alot of factors.and just not sbout the pride of building 1 in malaysia..well we better start looking into this things now,so 1 can be up by 2021...;)

Unlike a coal or gas power plant, a nuclear power plant can be considered green as it emits very little CO2 into the atmosphere. Then again, the same can be said of solar, wind and hydroelectric power plants as these are all not dependant on the use of fossil fuels.

i am totally very supportive of the government plan to build the nuclear power plant. even though there are a lot of objections from different parties but after thorough evaluation and analysis, i believe that it is a wise decision to start progressing towards nuclear power technology since it has been implementing safely in other developing countries as well and in the ling run, the people are
going to benefit more than harm if proper safety measurements are taken
